Breaking Waves

Our Story

Starting with nothing but a mutual love for adventure, two people fall in love, buy a boat, and set off to find breaking waves to surf and a life of fulfilment.

The journey starts in British Columbia, Canada. A town called Tofino and home base to a couple of surfers named Ben and Alie. The water is cold and they can't help but dream of surfing waves all to themselves somewhere hot

We found Kiana, our 1989 Sceptre sailboat and perfect adventure seeking vessel. After bringing her home from Washington state, we brought her back to her cruising potential while learning to sail in the waters around Vancouver Island.

Captain Ben
Passionate surfer, avid procrastinator, dreamer.

His sailing career started in Ontario, when he bought himself a boat when it was time for him to move out of his family home. Having no sailing experience, he taught himself on Lake Huron with the help of some buddies and usually some liquid confidence.

His surfing career started when he was living on the Gold Coast Australia for 6 months but the addiction started in Costa Rica. Since then surf has been a driving factor in most of his life decisions.

First Mate Alie
Ocean Enthusiast, Eternal Child, Frady-cat
Her sailing career started when the idea of sailing south in search of surf waves was born. Immediately on board with the idea, Ben chartered a sailboat in the Canadian gulf islands for a week to see how she would fare - These are the very first Breaking Waves episodes.

Her Surfing Career started small, surfing Canon Beach in Oregon and Costa Rica on vacation. When she moved to Vancouver Island and started making regular trips out to Tofino is when the addiction started. Ben and her made frequent trips out together, staying at a rental he had at the time and eventually they bought out there. Committing to Tofino as home.
